Hemel Metro Bank Colleague Guides Year 10 Students through CV & Interview Process

The UK’s community bank, Metro Bank, gives every colleague a Day to Amaze – essentially a paid day off to support a local charity or good cause. Harry Dear from the Hemel Hempstead store spent his Day to Amaze teaching Year 10 students in The Hemel Hempstead School how to write a curriculum vitae (CV).

The Hemel Hempstead School is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form located in the town of Hemel Hempstead.

Harry coached two groups of students aged 14 -15 on how to portray achievements and skillsets on a CV. He also taught the students basic interview skills, including how to prepare for one, how to answer questions, the importance of body language and how to dress appropriately for an interview.

To ensure a deeper understanding, Harry brought along his own CV that he had written up when he was younger, so that the students could have an idea of what an effective CV looks like.

“I was delighted to be able to teach the students how to prepare to join the workforce,” says Harry Dear, Hemel Hempstead Metro Bank’s Customer Service Representative. “The highlight of my day, was when I did a little bit of a role play asking the students some interview questions and hearing their different answers. I believe that the students are now able to identify what constitutes a good CV as well as the preparation needed before an interview.”

“We are passionate about our people-people culture and have a distinct recruitment policy to get the right people and then train them for success,” explains Grace Pressland, Metro Bank’s Recruitment Manager. “At this stage of a student’s life, a good CV is one that is easy to read, straightforward and conveys to the potential employer that the candidate is willing to learn. We believe in our ‘hire for attitude and train for skills’ ethos which works by promoting roles that are available and suitable for young adults across the business.”

Metro Bank’s Hemel Hempstead store is located at 56-58 Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead HP1 1DX. The store is currently open Monday – Saturday: 8.30am - 6pm, Sunday: 11am - 5pm.
