20th August 2013

Metro Bank Founder and Chairman, Vernon Hill, has been awarded the Gold Stevie® Award in the Chairman of the Year Category at the 2013 International Business Awards (IBAs).

The International Business Awards are the world’s premier business awards programme. They were created in 2003 to honour and generate public recognition of the achievements and positive contributions of businesses and working people worldwide. This year’s awards, the 10th annual awards, were judged by more than 250 executives around the world.

All individuals and organisations worldwide – public and private, for-profit and non-profit, large and small - are eligible to submit nominations. The 2013 IBAs received entries from more than 50 nations and territories, and more than 3,300 nominations from organisations of all sizes and industries.

Hill was awarded the Gold Award for his positive contribution to the UK banking sector and his ability to create opportunities that ultimately improve experiences for customers. Hill was described as “instrumental in Metro Bank’s successful launch and the subsequent explosive growth of the UK’s most customer focused high street Bank”.

Other Executive winners this year include Marc Bernioff, CEO, Salesforce.com in the Business Services category; Simon Turner, President of Global Development, Starwood Hotels in the Hospitality & Leisure category; and Subaskaran Allirajah, Executive Chairman, Lycamobile Worldwide in the Telecommunications category. British entrepreneur James Caan, CEO and Chairman, Hamilton Bradshaw Group, was honoured as one of the Silver Stevie award winners in the Chairman of the Year category.

Commenting on the award, Vernon Hill, Founder and Chairman of Metro Bank, said: “Metro Bank is leading the revolution in British banking, offering customers the very best in service and convenience. We launched three years ago to provide a new banking choice for the British people; one focused on putting them and their needs first. Their overwhelming reception has enabled us to grow to more than 200,000 customer accounts and 19 stores in that time, and we thank them for their ongoing support.”

“The 2013 International Business Awards are noteworthy for featuring the best collection of entries we have ever received,” said Michael Gallagher, president and founder of the Stevie Awards. “The judges have been unanimous in their comments about the quality of achievements, and the expertise with which they were portrayed, in the nominations we received this year. We extend our most heartfelt congratulations to all of this year’s Gold, Silver and Bronze Stevie Award winners.”
