Metro Bank, gives every colleague a Day to Amaze – essentially a paid day off to support a local charity or good cause. Inspired by the cancer journey of a close friend, Metro Bank colleague Steve Degg has just organised his friends on another epic bike ride to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.
“At the young age of just 51, my friend Carl was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Rather than dwelling on his situation, Carl decided to challenge himself by riding the Grand Depart in Brussels to give him something to focus on. He also wanted to help raise vital funds for research in the hope that one day a cure can be found,” explains Metro Bank’s Local Director Steve Degg. “And so, One Hull Of A Ride was born. Carl and I together with a group of dedicated friends have now taken on the Grand Departs in Yorkshire and Copenhagen, as well as organising our own ride from Hull to London. To date we have raised over £50,000 for a number of charities en route.
“This year, as a former soldier in the Royal Engineers, Carl asked us to support The Royal British Legion, which provides a lifetime of care and support to the UK Armed Forces and their families. In June we cycled just over 200 miles, climbing 5,000 ft along the coast of Normandy visiting some of its most famous beaches, as well as various war memorials that commemorate soldiers from the Royal Engineers, which is the regiment that Carl served in, stopping to pay our respects to those who gave their tomorrow for our today.”
