  • Change from an interest-only mortgage to paying back capital as well

Overpayments

You can make one-off and regular overpayments at any time in addition to your normal monthly payments.

Making overpayments could save you paying a considerable amount of interest, and may also help you to repay your mortgage earlier.

How much can I overpay by?

Each year residential mortgage customers can overpay by up to 20% and Buy to Let customers up to 10% of their original advance. This resets on the anniversary of when your mortgage started.

If you overpay by more than this, early repayment charges are applied - you’ll have all the details about this in your mortgage offer paperwork.

What happens when I make an overpayment?

Any payment of less than £500 will be kept as a credit on your mortgage, and will not reduce your mortgage balance, unless it means you have a total credit of £500 or more.

If you make a payment that means you will be £500 or more in credit, we will automatically reduce your mortgage balance. We’ll recalculate your monthly payments in line with your new mortgage balance.

It isn’t possible to under pay your mortgage or to take payment holidays.

Mortgage FAQs and contact details

If you're an existing Metro Bank customer with either a Residential or a Buy to Let mortgage with us, and you'd like to know more about the ins and out of your mortgage we have some frequently asked questions that may help.

Take a later life mortgage

This is a way of releasing money from your home without having to move. The money released will be in the form of a loan secured against your home and must be used to repay your existing mortgage balance with us. We don’t provide later life mortgages; however, we have partnered with Legal & General for them to provide the option to offer their later life mortgage products to our customers. More information can be found (hyperlink) or please contact us for more information. This only applies if you have a residential mortgage.

Later life mortgages

We’ve partnered with Legal & General to offer you lifetime and retirement interest only mortgages.

Designed for customers aged 55 or over, a later life mortgage lets you borrow money based on the value of your home, as a loan secured against it, while you continue to live there. The loan is usually repaid when the last surviving borrower dies or moves out of the home into long-term care.

  • With a lifetime mortgage you are able to decide whether you’d like to pay all, some or none of the interest each month.
  • With a retirement interest only mortgage you must pay the interest in full each month. As a last resort, your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up with your payments.

There’s lots to consider so it’s important to receive financial advice to help you make the right decision. There may be cheaper ways to borrow money. Legal & General has its own team of specialist later life mortgage advisers, to help you find the right option for you. If you speak to one of their advisers, there’s no obligation to proceed.

Learn more about later life mortgages with Legal & General or call us to discuss Legal & General later life mortgages on 0345 319 1200.
