Payments

You can make Faster Payments in store, over the phone, via your Internet Banking or using the latest version of our Mobile Banking app. CHAPS payments can be made in store or over the phone and if the payment is made before 2pm on any working day it will usually reach the recipient on the same day. CHAPS payments made after 3pm will mean that the recipient receives your payment the next working day.

Only available on a Cash Account 16+.

Please note: there is a fee for making a CHAPS payment - see Cash Account information

Cheques

Cheques normally take 4 working days to process. If you’d like to know how quickly you can withdraw your funds after a cheque has been paid into your account you can take a look at our cheque clearance guide.

Important: Cheques will begin to be processed as soon as they are received by a bank, which could be on the same day as it’s written. Please ensure you have enough money in your account to cover all your payments, including cheques, to avoid becoming overdrawn.

Please note: there are fees for depositing USD cheques – see Cash Account information

FAQs

How do I pay money into my account?

There are a few different ways you can pay money into your Metro Bank Cash Account, the fastest being a payment from one bank to another. You can also deposit a cheque or pay cash* into your account at your nearest store.

*Please note that you may be asked additional questions about the source of funds to help keep your money safe.

There are limits on the amount of cash customers can pay into their Metro Bank account each day.

  • Personal accounts – daily limit £5,000*

Changes to who can pay in cash

To pay cash into a Metro Bank account you must either:

  • be named on the account, or
  • have authority to manage the account – e.g. power of attorney, or
  • be paying less than £250 into a Young Savers account if you are not named on the account (the account holder or a named person on the account can pay in larger amounts).

Exchanging cash

You can only exchange cash over the counter if you’re a Metro Bank customer.

How is a Cash Account different to a Current Account?

The Cash Account is our simple, basic bank account. It covers all your day-to-day needs, but doesn’t provide overdrafts or Direct Debit payments. Take a look at what is offered by our Cash Account.

You can buy things online, in GBP only. However, using your cash card outside the UK is limited:

  • Some overseas merchants may allow the option to convert your payment into GBP at the point of sale. However, the exchange rate may not be competitive. You should check the exchange rate which should be shown on the terminal before completing the transaction.
  • Overseas ATM withdrawals are not available. Some overseas ATMs where the LINK logo is displayed can offer cash withdrawals in GBP however, this is not guaranteed by Metro Bank and should be considered before taking out the product as this may not be suitable for you if for example you’re looking to travel frequently. Where these transactions are possible Metro Bank will not charge you a fee, but you may be charged by the ATM provider.
  • The Cash Account cash card cannot be used at ‘Pay at Pump’

If you need an account with more features, you may want to take a look at our Current Account
