Apple Pay

One-touch payment at your fingertips

Apple Pay is an easy and safe way to pay using your Metro Bank debit or credit card. Simply make contactless payments in shops with your Apple device or pay with a single touch within apps.

Apple Pay services on our Business Accounts

We had to temporarily pause Apple Pay so we could make some improvements. These upgrades are now finished and brand new debit cards are on their way to our business customers – they should all be delivered by mid-December.

You’ll need to activate your new card once you receive it, and add the card details to your phone – then you’ll be ready to start paying with again.

In the meantime, your accounts will work as normal and you can still use contactless. If you have any questions, call 0345 08 08 508 or visit us in store – we’re open seven days a week.

What shops can I use Apple Pay in?

Apple Pay is already accepted wherever contactless payment is – just look out for the contactless or Apple Pay logo.

Simply hold your compatible iPhone over the contactless reader, with your finger on Apple Touch ID. You can also use your passcode. Or you can double-click the ‘Home’ button when your iPhone is locked to access Wallet to quickly make your purchases.

Apple Watch wearers just need to double-click the side button and hold the display of Apple Watch up to the contactless reader. A gentle tap and beep confirm that your payment information was sent.

If you’re in the UK some merchants limit purchases to a maximum value of £30.

Effortless in-app purchases Within apps, look for the Buy with Apple Pay button or Apple Pay as a payment method. Use Apple Touch ID to complete the purchase. Payments are deducted straight from your account, so no need to enter your details again.

When you view your card in Wallet, you’ll see the last transaction for each credit card or debit card. You might also see the last ten transactions for your cards. Just tap the card and tap the information button on screen. You’ll see the last 10 transactions made from your device.

Apple Pay activity is also included on your credit and debit card statements.

What makes Apple Pay safe?

Apple Pay is safer than using a traditional credit or debit card. Every transaction on your iPhone or iPad requires you to authenticate with Touch ID or your passcode. Your Apple Watch is protected by the passcode that only you know, and your passcode is required every time you put on your Apple Watch.

Your card number and identity aren’t shared with the merchant, and your actual card numbers aren’t stored on your device or on Apple servers.

When you pay in stores, neither Apple nor your device sends your actual credit or debit card numbers to merchants. When you pay in apps, the merchant will only receive information like name, email address, billing and shipping addresses you authorise to share to fulfil your order.

Apple Pay keeps anonymous transaction information such as approximate purchase amount. This information can’t be tied back to you and never includes what you're buying. Apps that use Apple Pay must have a privacy policy that you can view which governs the use of your data.

FAQs

Where can I use Apple Pay?

Apple Pay can be used at any store displaying the Apple Pay or Contactless logo. You can make in-app purchases, use it on the web using Safari and pay for journeys with Transport for London (TfL). Some UK merchants may not be able to accept Apple Pay purchases over £30.

I’ve had problems setting up Apple Pay what can I do?

If you encounter any problems when adding cards to your device, Metro Bank and Apple Care are on hand to quickly resolve any issues. Call 0345 4503 255 or just pop in to your nearest store and someone will help you.

How do I return an item that I bought using Apple Pay in a store?

The cashier can use the Device Account Number to find the purchase and process the return, just like they would with a traditional credit or debit card payment. To see the last four or five digits of the Device Account Number:

• For your iPhone or iPad, go to Wallet, tap the card, and tap the i information symbol..
• For your Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone, go to the My Watch tab, tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap your card.
If the cashier needs your card details to process the return, you can follow the same steps for making a payment:

1. On the device that you used to make the original payment, select the card that you want to be refunded. Remember to use the card registered within Apple Pay, not your physical card.
2. On your iPhone, hold the device near the reader and authorise the return with Touch ID or passcode. On your Apple Watch, double-click the side button and hold the display of your Apple Watch within an inch of the contactless reader.

Depending on the return and refund policies of the store, it may take up to several days for the return transaction to appear on your credit or debit card statement.

What should I do if my device is lost or stolen?

With Apple Pay, you authorise each purchase with Touch ID or your passcode. And every time you put on your Apple Watch, you need to enter your passcode to access it. These features help prevent other people from using Apple Pay on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch.

If your iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen
You can go to iCloud.com/find or use the Find My iPhone app to suspend or permanently remove the ability to pay from that device with Apple Pay. Your cards will be suspended or removed from Apple Pay even if your device is offline and not connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network. You can also call your bank to suspend or remove your cards from Apple Pay. Learn more about what to do if your iPhone is lost or stolen.

If your Apple Watch is lost or stolen
You can remove the ability to pay with your credit or debit cards from Apple Pay on iCloud.com/find. Just sign in, click Settings, choose your device, and click Remove All. You can also call Metro Bank on 0345 08 08 500 to suspend or remove your cards from Apple Pay.
